Tucan Travel Carbon Offset Scheme
Working in Partnership with World Land Trust
Working in partnership with international conservation charity World Land Trust Tucan Travel is offering a way for our travellers to make a real contribution to the health of the planet. There are three ways you can help:
1. Offset a portion of your share of the carbon emissions created on your tour
As part of our commitment to promoting responsible travel, we are offering you the chance to offset a portion of your share of the carbon emissions of your tour. Your contributions will fund important conservation projects around the world, helping to repair the damage your holiday does to the climate and to preserve and protect threatened wild places for the long term.
You will see in the pricing areas of the brochure that there is an optional contribution to be made in your local currency with your final payment.
• If your tour is up to 27 days long, you would donate:
A$20 • C$20 • CHF20 • €15 • £10 • NZ$25 • US$20
• If your tour is 28 days or longer, you would donate:
A$40 • C$40 • CHF40 • €30 • £20 • NZ$50 • US$40
We will donate an additional 10% of the total contributions to World Land Trust. 100% of all contributions are passed on to World Land Trust.
We will not receive any direct financial benefit or commission and we will also absorb all processing fees, so there’s no administration cost to World Land Trust and they can spend the money donated where it counts - protecting threatened habitats worldwide.
The scheme is entirely voluntary and you can to opt-out if you choose.
2. Calculate and carbon balance the emissions of your international air travel
You can calculate the carbon dioxide emissions associated with your flights and offset them online using World Land Trust’s carbon calculator. Funds go to the World Land Trust’s Carbon Balanced programme.
3. Make a direct donation to World Land Trust to protect threatened tropical habitat
We know that balancing carbon emissions alone is not enough. The health of the planet depends also on saving the threatened wild places that are important for biodiversity.
We fully endorse World Land Trust’s mission to work with local conservation organisations to purchase and protect threatened natural habitats, saving real acres in real places. You can make a direct donation to World Land Trust to support these vital intiatives - £100 (or equivalent currency) saves one acre forever. Smaller donations are also well appreciated by the trust.
Frequently asked questions
What is carbon offsetting?
Carbon offsetting is the process of balancing carbon emissions by making an equivalent carbon saving. The World Land Trust generates carbon offsets by restoring tropical rainforests and protecting imminently threatened forests from further destruction.
Tropical rainforests act as carbon sinks, absorbing atmospheric carbon into their woody tissue as they grow and locking up that carbon in mature forests. Deforestation releases this carbon back into the atmosphere, and is the source of 20% of all man-made carbon emissions. Restoring and protecting rainforests can help to balance our harmful emissions and mitigate dangerous climate change.
Who is World Land Trust?
Our carbon offset partner is World Land Trust, a not-for-profit, international conservation organisation that takes direct action to save rainforest and other biologically important lands.
Since it was founded in 1989, World Land Trust has helped local conservation organisations to purchase and protect over 400,000 acres of threatened habitats in Asia, Europe and Central and South America.
Obviously there are numerous companies offering carbon offsetting services, however after having done a considerable amount of research, we believe that World Land Trust has the most scientifically sound approach, strongest environmental ethic and a socially responsible philosophy.
How will my Carbon Offset Scheme contributions make a difference?
World Land Trust will fund projects on your behalf through their Carbon Balanced programme, which works to mitigate climate change by restoring degraded forest and preventing deforestation in locations worldwide.
These projects work hand-in-hand with land purchase and protection in partnership with local non-government organisations to extend protected areas and encourage the participation of local communities in conservation efforts.
All projects must adhere to strict design standards which ensure that carbon offsets produced are real, attributable to a specific location, measurable, verifiable, protected and properly managed.
Carbon Balanced offset calculations are based on the best available DEFRA-approved methods and a Radiative Forcing Index of 1.9 to take into account the non CO2 emissions related effects of aviation on the environment, so you can be sure that the science behind the carbon offsets is sound.
